The Oakland Coalition of Churches is a collaborative effort of the approximately one dozen churches in Oakland and the Town. Successful projects to date have included: cleanup of Oakland Avenue (twice); summer enrichment program at OACS; townwide summer bible camp for children; initiation of a Town community garden; Love Out Loud event; children’s petting zoo at the Oakland Heritage Festival; and rebuilding of the Mosby home.
Toys for needy children, collected through the Oakland Police Department, were distributed by the Coalition just before Christmas. Churches distributing the toys were Mt. Zion A.M.E., St. Paul’s Evangelical Baptist, West Orange Baptist and Trinity Baptist.
On Saturday evening, December 10, the Coalition sponsored a Community Caroling event at the Oakland Town Meeting Hall. Over 150 residents and others attended and had a great time singing. Choirs from several Oakland Churches led the singing accompanied by guitarist John Starkovich and Mt. Zion Music Director and keyboardist Chad Edwards. Five ‘food trucks’ were stationed in the Town Circle and provided delicious fares. Here are some pictures from the event:
The Coalition meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Oakland Town Meeting Hall.
